Sergei Rachmaninoff

Thursday August 28, 2008
One of my favorite films is "Somewhere in Time," it's such a beautiful movie made more captivating by Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." Sergey Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian piano virtuoso and composer. Under the advice of his cousin, a concert pianist by the name of Aleksandr Siloti, Sergey was sent to study at the Moscow Conservatory under Nikolay Zverev. Aside from ""Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," Rachmaninoff's other works include "Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 no. 2" and "Piano Concerto no. 2 in C minor."

Music Education in the News: In Gainesville, Florida, a monthly Family Jam Night welcomes parents and children to play with various percussion instruments and mingle with other music buffs.

This Day in Music History: 1850 - The opera "Lohengrin" by Richard Wagner premiered in Weimar, Germany.
