Jazz is a type of music that uses improvisation, simple or complex syncopated rhythms, altered scales and specific harmonies. Jazz bands use instruments such as the clarinet, drums, electric guitar, piano, trombone and trumpet. There are other forms of music that developed from jazz including bebop, blues, ragtime, rhythm and blues and swing. This Day in Music History: 1874 - Composer Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Aside from being a composer, Holst was also an influential music educator of the 20th century. He is particularly known for his orchestral pieces and stage works. His most famous work is "The Planets," an orchestral suite consisting of seven movements, each named after a planet and their respective character in Roman mythology. It starts off with the spine-tingling "Mars, the Bringer of War" and ends with "Neptune, the Mystic."
