Jean-Baptiste Lully was a violinist in Louis XIV's court band and later became the King's court composer. He wrote operas, court ballets, comedy-ballets, dances, motets, suites and sacred works. Throughout the course of his career, Lully collaborated with two other notable figures; namely the playwright Moliere and the poet/librettist Philippe Quinault.
This Day in Music History: 1892 - Darius Milhaud was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. He was a prolific French composer and violinist who further developed polytonality. He was part of Les Six; a term coined by the critic Henri Collet pertaining to a group of young French composers of the 20th century.
