The Star Spangled Banner was written by lawyer/poet Francis Scott Key. Key was inspired to write it during the British attack of Fort McHenry on September 13, 1814 and the courageous defense made by American forces. In 1931, the U.S. Congress designated "Star Spangled Banner" to be the National Anthem of the United States.
