A symphony orchestra's string section is composed of the violin, viola, cello and double bass. Each of these instrument plays an important role in terms of tone color, dynamics and pitch. The violin is the smallest and has the highest range; the viola is tuned lower than the violin. and thus sounds darker; the cello is larger and its body is thicker than the violin; and the double bass is the largest and has the lowest range.
