Christmas Countdown

25 Days of Christmas 2008 - Day 11

By Espie Estrella, About.com

Carol of the Day
"We Three Kings" was originally titled as "Three Kings of Orient"; this Christmas carol is nice to sing because of its tune and the rhyming lyrics. It was published in 1863 and 1865, both bore the title "Three Kings of Orient".

Composer of the Day
Jacques Offenbach was one of the composers who helped develop and define the operetta. He composed over 100 stage works among them are "Orphée aux enfers" and "Les Contes d’Hoffmann" which was left unfinished when he died. The "Can-Can" from "Orphée aux enfers" remains very popular; it has been performed many times and used in several films including "Ice Princess" and "Stardust."

Today in Music History
On this day in 1964, Austrian composer and author Alma Schindler died in New York, USA. Shindler mainly wrote songs based on poems written by poets like Heine and Rilke. She was also the wife of composer Gustav Mahler.
