Composer of the Day
Percy Grainger was an Australian composer, conductor, pianist and avid collector of folk music. He moved to the U.S.A. in 1914 and eventually became a U.S. citizen. Much of his compositions were influenced by English folk music. His major works include "Country Gardens," "Molly on the Shore" and "Handel in the Strand."

On this day in 1737, the Italian luthier, Antonio Stradivari, passed away. The 17th and early 18th centuries was the period when the art of violin making reached its peak. The Italians Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri, as well as the Austrian Jacob Stainer, are most noted during this period. Stradivari was an apprentice to Nicolo Amati, Andrea Amati's grandson. The most expensive violin is the Stradivarius, named after Antonio Stradivari.
