Santa Clause is Comin’ To Town

History of Christmas Carols

By Espie Estrella, About.com

Title: "Santa Clause is Comin’ To Town"

Author: This carol was the result of musician John Frederick Coots and lyricist Haven Gillespies' (1888-1975) collaborative effort. The song was written in 1932 and was first performed by Eddie Cantor in 1934. The carol became even more popular when it was recorded by celebrated performers like Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters.

Interesting Fact: In 1970, an animated film loosely based on the song and narrated by Fred Astaire was released.

Lyrics (Excerpt):
You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Clause is coming to town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice
Santa Clause is coming to town
