for iPods, iPhones and iPads

By , About.com Guide

With so many apps to choose from that answers every imaginable need or interest, choosing which one to download can get a bit tedious. I've narrowed down 7 free music apps that I consider boredom busters. These apps aren't only easy to use, they're also fun! So take your pick below and download away. Note: These apps were tested using an Apple iPod Touch.

1. SoundHound

Ever had one of those moments when you remember only a few lines of a song but the song title and the name of the artist escapes your memory? Then SoundHound is the solution to your dilemma. SoundHound lets you search for a song by either typing the song's title or the name of the artist. You can also search for a song by playing the track from another device, singing a few lines or humming the tune.

2. Starmaker

If you're one of those people who love sing-alongs or karaoke parties, Starmaker Karaoke with Auto-Tune is right up your alley. This app lets you sing-along and record your favorite songs then share it on your profile so others can listen to your renditions. You are given 4 free songs and 70 free tokens upon download, enough to purchase one song. You will need to purchase tokens if you want to download more songs.

3. Ringtones 500.000+

Ringtones 500.000+ has a wide array of ringtones and alerts to choose from. Check out their featured section or browse the many different categories of ringtones. The Help section has step by step guides on how to transfer to iTunes and sync your ringtones to your iPod, iPhone or iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

4. Christmas Music

This is an easy to use app for free download that compiles holiday tunes that are in the public domain or are under a creative commons license. This is a very timely app to download during this Yuletide season. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.

5. ChordBank: Guitar Chords

ChordBank is an easy to use app that newbie and even seasoned guitarists would truly appreciate. You simply swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen up or down and choose the key, type of chord and/or fret position. The app quickly displays the chords with finger positions on the fretboard and you can either strum or play each string one at a time. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

6. Ratatap Drums

Ratatap Drums is a fun app that lets you play a drum kit using only your fingers. Just pull-out the menu at the bottom, choose your loop length and beats per minute then start recording. You can also jam with songs in your playlist. You can listen to other people's recordings or upload and share your own. This app is very responsive and comes with 10 built-in drumsets. Because this is a free version, there's an ad on top of the screen that you might accidentally click while playing. Upgrading to the pro version gives you access to more features. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.2 or later

7. Finger Piano Lite

Finger Piano is actually one of the few piano apps that I find quite useful; I even upgraded to the pro version. For the free version, the app comes with several songs and it shows whether it is played by the left or right hand. You simply pick a song, click on play and the notes being played are displayed on the keyboard. You can pause, move back or move forward. You can listen and study how the pieces are played and when you're ready, you can play along. You can adjust the setting by choosing key width and turning features such as note naming on or off. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
