Definition: American-born music that uses improvisation, simple or complex syncopated rhythms, altered scales and specific harmonies. Jazz bands use instruments such as the clarinet, drums, electric guitar, piano, trombone and trumpet. There are other forms of music that developed from jazz including bebop, blues, ragtime, rhythm and blues and swing. A popular jazz musician is Louis Armstrong.
