What is a disc jockey?:
Also called DJ or deejay, these are people who play music for the enjoyment of the listening public.
What does a disc jockey do?:
The role of the disc jockey is to play music geared towards a specific audience; whether it be for those who love classical music, pop, rnb, country, folk, rock, disco, etc. DJ's also choose songs that will fit a certain occasion; whether it be for a wedding, birthday, award ceremony and other social gatherings.
Where do disc jockey's work?:
DJ's work in radio stations where they are expected to create a daily play list. Aside from spinning records, they may also add segments to the program where they interact with listeners.
They also play music at local functions such as parties and parades; some even get the chance to go on tour with famous artists. DJ's who perform at local venues are expected to have their own equipment such as turntables, mixers and of course, a stack of records and cd's.
What are the qualities of a good disc jockey?:
What other pointers should a disc jockey keep in mind?:
Many DJ's who've become successful did so through word of mouth. If you act professionally, perform your job well and leave a good impression on your clients, you will get referrals which in time may land you a major gig. Also, make your price competitive; research what other dj's in your area are charging.
Why become a disc jockey?:
As long as there's people who listen to the radio and social functions where music is needed, the demand for professional disc jockeys will remain. Where else can you play and listen to music that you love and get paid for it? The best dj's are those who, not only know how to spin and mix records, they also know a lot about the history of each song they play. DJ's should be great hosts as well.
