What is a sound technician?:

Also called audio technician, sound engineer or audio engineer, their main task is to make sure that any audio and/or sound coming from a live or taped source is processed as clearly as possible.

What does a sound technician do?:

The role of a sound technician is very important in every performance. He/she makes sure that any audio or sound that is picked up by microphones, amplifiers, etc. is processed properly. The sound technician handles the mixing board and adjusts volume levels of the microphone and the sound coming from various musical instruments used in a performance. In other words, the sound technician is the one who makes sure the singer can be heard above the instruments while assuring that the whole listening experience is pleasant and well-balanced.

What are the qualities of a good sound technician?:

  • Punctual
  • Flexible
  • Works well with others
  • Willing to travel
  • Thoroughly conducts mic and sound checks before a performance
  • Surveys the venue to determine the best placement of mics, amps, speakers, etc.
  • Makes sure that the audio/sound can be heard by the whole audience, even those in the back
  • Makes sure the audio/sound, whether live or taped comes out clearly without any disturbances such as mic feedback
  • Knows how to install and repair his/her equipment

  • Be updated and familiar with the latest audio/sound technology
  • Know how to handle a mixing board or console to ensure the highest sound quality possible
  • Take college credit courses or attend programs in recording, mixing, production, and other related subjects
  • Look at every gig as part of your training to become a better sound technician
  • Why become a sound technician?:

    Sound technicians are needed in a variety of settings, from events at a local club, to concerts, radio stations, tv and film. Sound technicians are not limited to music performances, they are also needed on such occasions like political rallies or public speeches. Many sound technicians start out by doing freelance work and then slowly build their portfolio until they land major gigs. As the volume of work and the number of equipment expands, so does the need to hire assistants. A sound technician's assistant may conduct mic checks, see if the cables are properly plugged in and other tasks.
