In 1924, the Curtis Institute of Music was founded by Mary Louise Curtis Bok; it offers merit-based full-tuition scholarships to its students. The school maintains a small number of selected enrollees guiding them under the philosophy that students "learn most by doing."
Famous people who attended Curtis includes Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Gian Carlo Menotti and Lang Lang. Keyboard, composition and conducting students practice on Steinway pianos exclusively. Their current president is Roberto Díaz.
