  • Quick Facts:

    In 1910, the newly founded Department of Music of Indiana University was headed by Charles Campbell; he was succeeded by Dean Merrill in 1919. By 1922, the department which already became a school, began offering degree programs. Since then, the student population has increased from 296 in 1947 to over 1.600 today.

    Jacobs School of Music has more than 180 full-time faculty members with Gwyn Richards as the current dean. Some of its notable alumni are violinist Joshua Bell, trumpeter Chris Botti, saxophonist Michael Brecker and pianist Angelin Chang.
