Musical TV Shows for Kids

By Espie Estrella, About.com

Another great way of instilling the love of music in your children is letting them watch educational tv shows for kids that fosters music education. Since most homes are never without a television set, why not make the tv work to your child's advantage? Here are several suggested tv programs to check out.

BabyFirstTV - This channel provides wholesome and educational shows for babies, toddlers and parents. Their program called "Rainbow Dreams" specifically features songs for naptime such as lullabies and other soothing music accompanied by colorful images.

Blues Clues - One of the shows my daughter loved when she was a preshooler. The older episodes were hosted by Steve but newer episodes are hosted by Joe. The real star of the show however is Blue, the adorable and playful puppy who loves leaving clues. Children will have fun watching this interactive cartoon as they try to uncover the clues with songs and adventures.

Dora the Explorer - Another popular show for preshoolers on Nick Jr. Watch the adventures of Dora and her friendly companion Boots as The Map guides them along the way. Kids will learn both Spanish and English through songs and wonderful adventures. Dora's cousin Diego, who sometimes appears on this show, also has his own show called "Go, Diego, Go".

Jack's Big Music Show - This show airs on Noggin and is one of the few shows that focuses mainly on music. Each episode kids are introduced to songs in various genres as well as different types of musical instruments. They also have featured guest artists.

Johnny and the Sprites - A show on Playhouse Disney starring John Tartaglia; a Tony Award nominated performer, and his 4 Sprite friends. What makes this show unique is the way they incorporate Broadway-style music to teach kids about important issues and themes.

Little Einsteins - Another excellent show on the Disney Channel which fosters music appreciation. Little Einsteins introduces kids to classical music, music terminology, musical instruments and more. All the characters are musically talented and their enthusiasm about music will surely pique the interest of kids.

Sesame Street - The show which taught me how to read at age 4; it's true! I think everyone knows about this long-running tv program for kids which teaches reading, math skills and more through songs and stories. With lovable characters such as Big Bird, Ernie, Bert and of course, Elmo, kids will enjoy watching it while learning at the same time.

The Backyardigans - I find the characters of this show so adorable and the songs captivating. The Backyardigans features 5 friends - Austin, Pablo, Tasha, Tyrone and Uniqua, as they go on different adventures through the power of their imagination. Each episode features songs and dance as the five friends set out on another epic adventure while learning something new along the way.
