Composer of the Day
Carl Maria von Weber was a composer, piano virtuoso, orchestrator, music critic and opera director who helped establish the German Romantic and nationalist movements. His most famous work is the opera "Der Freischütz" (The Free Shooter) which opened on June 8, 1821 in Berlin. He died in 1826 at the age of 39 after a long battle with tubercolosis.

On this day in 1963, singer Ruth Lee Jones, famously known as Dinah Washington, died in Detroit, Michigan due to an overdose of diet pills and alcohol. Also referred to as "The Queen of the Blues," Dinah Washington was a well-known vocalist of the mid-20th century. Her versatile vocal ability enabled her to record songs in various genres; from blues to jazz to pop. She was married seven times and has two sons.
