Marriage & Divorce

We all fall in love, and in the process our hearts may get broken several times before we finally find that one person to spend the rest of our life with. Case in point these musicians, vocalists and songwriters who, may have loved and lost, but found happiness again.

  • Carole King met Gerry Goffin while attending Queens College. They became co-writers and later married. They came out with their first hit in 1961 with the song "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" recorded by the Shirelles. Carole and Gerry would eventually divorce in 1968. Carole's second husband was Charles Larkey, a bassist. She was married a third time to her co-writer Rick Evers, who passed away a year later due to drug overdose. Her fourth husband, with whom she is now divorced, was Rick Sorenson.

  • Joni Mitchell married folk singer Chuck Mitchell in 1965. Although her marriage to Chuck was short-lived, she retained his surname as part of her stage name. In 1982, Joni married bassist Larry Klein and the couple worked together on several projects including the album Dog Eat Dog. They separated before the recording of her 1994 album Turbulent Indigo.

  • James Taylor married fellow singer-songwriter Carly Simon in 1972. The couple recorded the duets "Mockingbird" and "Devoted to You." Sadly they divorced in 1983. In 1985, James married actress Kathryn Walker but they were later divorced in 1996. In 2001 James married Caroline Smedvig.

  • Carly Simon and James Taylor met in 1971 while she was opening for Cat Stevens at the Troubadour. They were married on November 3, 1972 but later divorced in 1983. In 1987, Carly married Jim Hart but they divorced in 2007.

  • Eric Clapton's first wife was model Pattie Boyd Harrison, they married in 1979 and divorced in 1989. He married graphic artist Melia McEnery in 2002, they have three daughters.

  • Paul Anka was married to Annie de Zogheb, a former model he met while on one of his performance tours. The couple has 5 daughters whose names all begin with the letter "A" (Amelia, Anthea, Alicia, Amanda and Alexandria). They divorced in 2000; Anka married Anna Yeage eight years later.

  • Patsy Cline married Gerald Cline in 1953. In 1957, the couple divorced but she retained his surname as part of her stage name. She then married Charlie Dick in 1957.

  • Ella Fitzgerald married bassist Ray Brown in 1949. They divorced in 1953.

  • In 1937, Nat King Cole married Nadine Robinson, a dancer in the musical Shuffle Along. They would later divorce in 1948. He then married singer Maria Ellington in 1948.

  • Julie Andrews married costume designer Tony Walton in 1959, they have a daughter named Emma. The two divorced in 1967 but remained friends. In 1969, Julie married director Blake Edwards.

  • Neil Diamond was married to Jay Posne, a teacher, in 1963. The two divorced in 1969. That same year Diamond married Marcia Kay Murphey but they later divorced in 1996.

  • Billy Joel was married to Elizabeth Weber in 1973 but they divorced in 1982. In 1985, Joel married model Christie Brinkley, but their marriage ended in 1994. Joel then married TV host Katie Lee in 2004.

  • On February 2, 1904, Gertrude Pridgett married William "Pa" Rainey and together they adopted the name "Ma" and "Pa" Rainey. The couple went on to perform together.

  • Dinah Washington was married 7 times and has 2 sons. Her last husband was NFL player Dick Lane.

  • Peggy Lee was married four times; first to guitarist Dave Barbou, then to actor Brad Dexter, and then to actor Dewey Martin and finally to Jack Del Rio whom she divorced in 1965.
